ABOUT ME

DENA A. DEGLAU Ph.D., CEO

Dr. Deglau's career has been spent in service to athletes, coaches and teachers in both the United States and Canada. Prior to completing both a Master’s and Ph.D. in the U.S.A., Dr. Deglau was an elite athlete, award winning coach and an instructor with the National Coaching Certification Program in Canada.

Dr. Deglau has been working in teacher education for almost 20 years in the U.S.A. In addition to teaching multiple graduate and undergraduate courses over her many years as a teacher educator, Dr. Deglau’s primary research focus has been on examining the effects of long-term professional development initiatives. Specifically, she has studied the impact of professional development on K-12 students, in-service teachers and districts practices. She had applied this scholarship to her work as a teacher educator and as a workshop leader for experienced K-12 teachers seeing to improve student learning.

Dr Deglau has spent the last eight years building the Master's Certification Program in Physical Education at the University of Maryland.  Under her tenure, the program has graduated 39 highly qualified teachers. As a result of ongoing community outreach while at UMD, Dr. Deglau was awarded the Muriel R. Sloan Communitarian Award from the School of Public Health in 2014. The award is presented to a faculty member who has made a significant contribution to the State of Maryland and surrounding communities through outreach programs.

Dr. Deglau has also developed and taught several coaching courses; most recently offering a special 'Coaching for Performance' course designed to help future coaches understand how to plan for the learning that underlies elite performance in sport and is foundational to student learning outcomes. Dr. Deglau shared her expertise and deep understanding of both teaching and coaching at the National Coaching Conference in 2015, presenting her paper: Rethinking Pedagogical Assumptions: Building a Crosswalk from Teaching to Coaching.

Dr. Deglau's research and publications have also included both the teaching and coaching contexts and include the following:
